    Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace: Developing Strong People Skills

    The discussion will identify the five major components of Emotional Intelligence: self-awareness, self-management, self-motivation, social awareness, and management of relationships.  It will help participants understand how to enhance their interpersonal, leadership, and conflict mediation skills in the workplace by using Emotional Intelligence principles to lead others more effectively.

    Course objectives include:

    1. Understanding the concept of emotional intelligence.

    2. Discovering personal emotional strength and weaknesses.

    3. Identifying individual emotional patterns in others.

    4. Practicing techniques to recognize and address opportunities for self-improvement and improving employee relations.

    5. Creating action plans for continued development.


    The presentation will add to PHR, SPHR or GPHR certified professional's HR knowledge by learning about a set of five emotional intelligence competencies that have proven to contribute to workplace achievement.  The set of five emotional intelligence competencies includes:


    Intuition & Empathy

    This competency is important because it will enhance the HR professional's understanding of other's feelings and perspectives, developing a customer service orientation by anticipating employee needs, developing people by sensing growth needs, and leveraging diversity by cultivating opportunities to raise awareness of the potential contribution of diverse perspectives.


    Political Acumen and Social Skills

    This competency will increase the participant's adeptness at inducing desirable responses in others. This competency is important in the workplace because it will lead to more effective persuasion techniques, improve communications, enhance leadership skills, assist in conflict resolution, and increase team collaboration capabilities.



    Participants will learn the benefits of knowing one's internal states, preferences, resources, and intuitions. This competency includes emotional awareness, accurate self-assessment, and self-confidence.


    Managing One's Internal States, Impulses, and Resources

    Awareness of this competency is important because it enhances self-control, trustworthiness, conscientiousness, adaptability, and innovation.


    Self-expectations and Motivation

    These emotional tendencies guide or facilitate achieving goals. Developing this competency will enhance achievement drive, commitment, initiative, and optimism.
