    EEOC Hot Topics

    Ms. Mary Tiernan of the EEOC is an engaging speaker who conveys often complicated legal theories in an understandable and entertaining manner. She will highlight the EEOC’s enforcement priorities and highlight EEOC litigation. She will also provide best practices for employers so they can avoid unlawful discrimination, harassment and retaliation in the workplace. This session will be very beneficial to every human resources professional to represent his or her company and ensure compliance with the federal anti-discrimination laws.

    Mary M. Tiernan has been employed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission since 1991. Since September 2007, she has served as the Program Analyst for the EEOC’s Philadelphia District Office and manages the Philadelphia District Office’s outreach and public affairs program. She provides training and technical assistance to employers and employees within the district. She has given hundreds of presentations to thousands of human resources officials, managers, supervisors and attorneys on the laws EEOC enforces, best practices on avoiding unlawful harassment, discrimination and harassment in the workplace.

    From 1991 through August 2007, she served as an EEOC Trial Attorney and Senior Trial Attorney, and litigated class action discrimination cases, and numerous individual cases, under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Equal Pay Act. Prior to working for the Commission, Ms. Tiernan had a legal clerkship with the Honorable Angelo A. Guarino, of the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ms. Tiernan graduated from Villanova University and Villanova University School of Law.
