    Beyond being the "Policy Police"
Creating & Communicating Policies that Really Matter
    Presented by:
    Katharine Giacalone, President, KG Works
Every Spring, HR professionals get bombarded with emails and flyers from outside vendors about their Employee Handbook - is it out of date?, is your organization safeguarded against litigation?, is your organization in compliance with the latest regulations? For HR professionals, yes it's about having an updated handbook and the latest and greatest policies, but leave that up to the lawyers. The real impact HR professionals can make about the Employee Handbook is knowing your company's culture and the best way to communicate the policies to the staff.
If the company's culture is entrepreneurial or hi-tech and the Employee Handbook is a 3-ring binder with 45 pages, does it match the culture?   If the company is a start-up, with a dozen staff members, are the policies bare bones, short and to the point? So why do HR professionals spend endless hours creating, explaining, and defending the Employee Handbook?   Here's the answer...managers and staff rarely question why the organization needs a leave, overtime or an EEO policy, the questions come into play around, how the policies are perceived, implemented and communicated. For example, are they fair, logical, to the point and purposeful?
By the end of the presentation participants should be able to:
    • Assess their Playground Personality© and begin to understand the words and actions that impact others
    • Flawlessly communicate with managers and staff and get beyond "that's the policy..." when consulting on the Employee Handbook content
    • Consult with executives/managers and unstick the miscommunication about a policy in the Employee Handbook
