    LGBTQ 101

    Program Description:

    LGBTQ 101 provides a summary of information to HR professionals who to want to better understand and foster a positive work environment for their Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) recruits, new hires, and seasoned colleagues. Knowing the vocabulary and community statistics is key, as is using this knowledge to make the workplace supportive and more inclusion while supporting the organization’s strategy and mission.

    This intensive session will be an opportunity for session participants to understand what LGBTQ really means, discuss the difference between gender identity and assigned sex, define critical terminology, understand the LGBTQ community profile and goals, plus and have an opportunity for anonymous questions to facilitate the widest possible attendee understanding on topics that specific individuals may have.

     

    Learning Objective(s):

    1.Review basic LGBTQ terminology and definitions.

    2.Understand the LGBTQ community profile and statistics.

    3.Learn LGBTQ community goals.

    4.Leave with best practices and new ideas to build businesses.

     

    Speakers Bio:

    Kris Fair

    Kris Fair is a lifelong Frederick County resident, graduating from Linganore High School in 2002, Frederick Community College in 2008 and Hood College in 2012. He has worked on civil rights and community involvement challenges for the last fifteen years. Kris has assisted organizations including The Frederick Arts Council, The Frederick Center, Marylanders for Marriage Equality, The Greater Frederick Advertising Federation, Frederick County Democratic Party and Weinberg Center for the Arts. Kris was recently awarded the Community Foundation’s Wertheimer award for excellence in volunteerism and was named the 2015 volunteer of the year by the Frederick County Democratic Party. He currently serves as the chair of the outreach and Pride festival committees for The Frederick Center. Additionally, Kris recently completed a three year tenure as director of The Frederick Festival of the Arts.

    Peter Brehm

    Peter Brehm currently serves as Treasurer for The Frederick Center, Inc., a nonprofit corporation dedicated to support, educate, link, organize, and provide outreach to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer community of central Maryland. He is also a volunteer with the organization’s Youth Group, Outreach Committee, and HIV/AIDS Committee. Brehm began his advocacy for LGBTQ issues when he was in college and served as president to the then Gay Student Union (GSU). He is also active with the Friends of Baker Park, the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick, the HIV/AIDS Coalition, Friends of Waterford Park, and serves as a coordinator for the Neighborhood Advisory Council 9. He has lived in Frederick with his husband, John Day, for ten years.
