Legislative Update

    January 22, 2013

The 2013 Maryland General Assembly Session began on January 9, 2013.We expect to see a return of several defeated bills from the 2012 session. So far, we've seen expanded mandated employer paid leave legislation, restricted employer usage of criminal conviction history of non-violent offenders. Additionally, a bill providing additional leave for family members in the Armed Forces.

We expect more this session in the area of Unemployment Insurance. The State continues to experience errors in payments, which are attributing to a short-fall in funding. Independent Contractors will again appear, and we've also seen a newly proposed registry that would be maintained by the Department of Licensing, Labor and Regulation (DLLR).
