MDSHRM Sponsored Workplace Violence Bill Update!

    March 6, 2019

HB 640/SB 555 Peace Orders - Workplace Violence Bill Hearings

YOUR PROMPT ACTION IS REQUIRED!  The House Judiciary Committee and the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committees of the Maryland General Assembly heard testimony on two bills (HB 640 and SB 555) during which Maryland SHRM testified inSUPPORT of the legislation. If you concur with the thrust of this legislation, we are asking you to share your views TODAY about the importance of shielding your organization and employees from the threat of workplace violence.

In brief, HB 640 and SB 555 would provide employers in Maryland with another tool to protect the health and safety of their employees when a known threat is present. These bills do not create a mandate for Maryland employers. Rather; they will allow an employer the opportunity to decide whether seeking a peace order makes sense for their organization. These bills also provide an employer a safeguard from civil liability for failure to file a petition on behalf of an employee should an incident later occur.
